PSYCH-K® Overview
Origins
PSYCH-K® began with a moment of exasperation. In December 1988, psychotherapist Rob Williams stood outside his home, fists clenched, and shouted to the sky: "Okay, God! If you don't want me to do this, what do you want me to do?" He was frustrated with a marketing flyer he couldn't get right—but the question opened a door to something much bigger than advertising copy.
What happened next changed the trajectory of his life and continues to touch over 100,000 people across 40+ countries. Williams described words appearing in his mind "like on a teleprompter"—instructions for a process of belief change he'd never conceived of before. He ran inside and transcribed what he was receiving. This became the first PSYCH-K® process, the Core Belief Balance, downloaded (as he always described it) from Divine Intelligence.
PSYCH-K® is a simple yet powerful process for changing subconscious beliefs that hold you back from living the life you want. Williams, experienced practice frustration with traditional therapy's limitations—clients had all the insights about their problems but still weren't experiencing the change they sought.
The practice operates on a fundamental principle that most healing practitioners have long understood: your conscious mind (willpower and insight) represents only about 5% of your consciousness, while your subconscious mind—where your beliefs, habits, and automatic responses live—makes up the other 95%. Traditional therapy focuses on that small 5%, which explains why knowing what you should do doesn't always translate into doing it.
Rob Williams always emphasized that PSYCH-K® is "a spiritual process with psychological benefits, not a psychological process to improve your spirituality." The practice begins with the assumption that we're all spiritual beings having a human experience, and it honors the wisdom and power within each person to direct their own transformation.
-
The core mechanism is creating what is known as a "whole-brain state"—meaning balanced communication between your left and right brain hemispheres. Your left hemisphere processes logic, language, and sequential analysis, while your right hemisphere handles intuition, emotions, and holistic synthesis. Most of the time, one side dominates the other, creating internal conflict when they disagree about what you believe or how to respond.
PSYCH-K® uses specific physical postures and movements (called “Balances”) to engage both hemispheres simultaneously. Research shows that the process of doing this creates bilateral, symmetrical brain wave patterns that neuroscientists describe as optimal for learning and change. When both hemispheres work together, you can integrate new beliefs at the subconscious level quickly and completely.
The physical positions are based on research into how body posture affects brain function. For example, crossing your right ankle over your left while crossing your left wrist over your right creates a specific pattern of bilateral stimulation. The positions feel unusual at first (you might look a bit like a pretzel), but they are, in fact, creating precise neurological conditions for change.
Muscle testing serves as the communication interface, letting your subconscious mind participate actively in the process. Your subconscious knows which beliefs need attention first, which Balance technique will work best, and when integration is complete. This makes PSYCH-K® more of a dialogue with your inner wisdom than a technique applied to you.
From a spiritual perspective, many clients report that the process feels like connecting with a higher intelligence or universal wisdom. Rob Williams saw PSYCH-K® as a way to align the three levels of your consciousness—conscious, subconscious, and superconscious—into unified awareness.
-
The "do-with" partnership approach makes PSYCH-K® fundamentally different from most healing modalities. Rather than positioning me, the practitioner, as an expert who does something to you, PSYCH-K® operates on the principle that you hold the wisdom and power to change yourself. I simply guides the process while your own subconscious mind and Higher Self direct the transformation.
This means the quality of your results depends much more on your own inner wisdom than on the facilitator's skill. As founder Rob Williams explained, "You can be marginally skilled at doing PSYCH-K® and still facilitate remarkable changes... because the quality of the experience is mostly a result of the wisdom that resides in the superconscious." It's empowering, but it also means you can't just show up passively—you're responsible for doing the work.
Permission protocols distinguish PSYCH-K® from many self-help techniques that simply assume any problem should be "fixed." Before making any change, we use muscle testing to ask your subconscious if the change is "safe and appropriate." This honors the possibility that what looks like a problem might actually be serving an important purpose or teaching a valuable lesson. If your subconscious says no, I respect that wisdom and explore why.
The speed of change surprises many people familiar with traditional therapy. A single belief can shift in 5-10 minutes rather than months or years of talk therapy. Brain mapping research documented changes in brain wave patterns after just 10 minutes that other approaches typically require weeks or months to achieve. This happens because PSYCH-K® works directly with the subconscious where beliefs actually live, rather than trying to override them with conscious willpower.
Muscle testing provides real-time verification that other belief change methods lack. You can literally see and feel when a belief has shifted—your arm will test weak (indicating stress) on a limiting belief before the Balance, then strong (indicating congruence) on the new belief afterward. This immediate feedback removes the guesswork and uncertainty common with other modalities.
-
PSYCH-K® addresses any area of life where self-limiting beliefs create obstacles. Anxiety and depression respond well because they often stem from beliefs about safety, worthiness, and capability formed in childhood. Someone might consciously know they're safe but have a subconscious belief that "the world is dangerous" running automatic anxiety responses. A few Balances can shift that deep programming.
Relationship patterns represent one of the most common applications. If you keep attracting the same type of problematic partner or repeating the same conflicts, subconscious beliefs about love, worthiness, or relationships are likely driving the pattern. PSYCH-K® can address beliefs like "I'm not worthy of love" or "intimacy isn't safe" that create self-sabotaging behaviors.
Physical health and body issues work well with PSYCH-K® as a complement to medical care. Practitioners see clients for weight loss, body image concerns, chronic conditions, allergies, and pain management. While PSYCH-K® doesn't diagnose or treat medical conditions, addressing stress patterns and beliefs about health, body, and healing can support the body's natural capacity for well-being.
Career and performance challenges often have roots in limiting beliefs. Fear of public speaking, sales resistance, leadership anxiety, or creative blocks typically connect to subconscious beliefs about capability, judgment, failure, or success. Athletes use PSYCH-K® for performance enhancement, business owners for prosperity blocks, and students for test anxiety.
Life purpose and spiritual development bring many people to PSYCH-K®. Questions like "What am I meant to do?" or "How do I connect more deeply with spirit?" often involve beliefs about worthiness, purpose, and connection that can be explored and transformed through the process.
As an example, Rob Williams shared a powerful example of a teenage girl having unexplained seizures that were physiologically real but medically untreatable. Through PSYCH-K®, they discovered the seizures were a coping mechanism for her fear of independence and going to college. By transforming the underlying beliefs, her attitude about leaving home completely changed—and her seizures stopped entirely.

Three peer-reviewed research papers have been published on PSYCH-K®, co-authored by neuroscientist Dr. Jeffrey Fannin and founder Rob Williams. The research used quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) technology to map brain wave patterns in 125 participants over two years, measuring what happens neurologically during PSYCH-K® processes.
The key finding: 98% of participants achieved a "whole-brain state" (bilateral, symmetrical brain wave patterns across both hemispheres) within minutes of using PSYCH-K®. This state creates globally distributed energy patterns that Dr. Fannin describes as optimal for learning, creativity, and rapid change. Brain mapping showed measurable shifts in hemispheric coherence that other approaches typically require weeks or months to achieve happening in just 10 minutes.
The research was published in NeuroConnections (Fall 2011), CAPA Quarterly (August 2012), and The International Journal of Management and Business (August 2012). Dr. Fannin noted that "the moment the brain has changed, the program has changed, you can see it on the screen"—providing real-time visual confirmation of belief transformation.
Several broader scientific frameworks support PSYCH-K's approach. Neuroplasticity research has established that the brain can reorganize and create new neural pathways throughout life, not just in childhood. The subconscious mind's dominant role is well-documented—research shows 95% of consciousness operates at the subconscious level, processing about 40 million bits of information per second compared to the conscious mind's 40 bits per second.
Epigenetics research by cell biologist Dr. Bruce Lipton (who became a strong advocate for PSYCH-K®) demonstrates that beliefs and perceptions influence gene expression. Your environment—including your internal environment of thoughts and beliefs—sends signals to your cells that can activate or suppress certain genes. This suggests that changing beliefs could potentially affect health at a cellular level.
Muscle testing research shows content validity and reliability among experienced practitioners. While controversial in mainstream medicine, studies in chiropractic and kinesiology literature document accuracy rates around 98% when practitioners are properly trained and calibrated. PSYCH-K® uses muscle testing primarily as a communication tool with the subconscious, not as a diagnostic technique.
We practitioners acknowledge that more research would be valuable—particularly long-term outcome studies, comparison trials with other modalities, and larger sample sizes. The existing brain mapping research validates the creation of whole-brain states, but questions about how long changes last and which applications work best remain areas for further investigation.
What to Expect in a PSYCH-K® Session
A PSYCH-K® session typically lasts 60-75 minutes and begins with me asking questions to understand what you want to change and exploring the beliefs that might be creating obstacles. Together, we'll craft new belief statements that support your goals—for example, transforming "I'm not worthy of success" into "I deserve and welcome success in all areas of my life."
I will use muscle testing (gently pressing on your extended arm) to identify which beliefs your subconscious currently holds as true or false, which creates an interesting moment when you discover your conscious desires often conflict with subconscious programming.
The actual transformation happens during a "Balance"—a specific posture, movement, or protocol that creates the “whole-brain state” needed for rapid belief change. This might involve sitting with your ankles and wrists crossed in a particular pattern, doing cross-crawl movements, or holding specific positions while I guide you. The process feels a little unusual but it isn’t difficult, and many people report feeling deeply relaxed, experiencing emotional releases (sometimes crying or laughing), or sensing energy shifts as old beliefs release and new ones integrate. Your subconscious mind chooses which Balance to use through muscle testing, ensuring the approach aligns with your inner wisdom.
After the Balance (which typically takes 5-10 minutes per belief), I will verify the change through muscle testing—your new belief should now test strong where it previously tested weak, providing immediate confirmation of the shift. Sessions usually address 2-6 beliefs depending on complexity, and you'll leave with specific action steps because, as founder Rob Williams emphasized, "beliefs create potential, but action creates results."
-
Reflection is the best preparation you can do before a session. Spend time thinking about what areas of your life feel stuck, blocked, or frustrating. What patterns keep repeating despite your best efforts? Where do you feel internal conflict between what you want and what you're experiencing? The more clarity you bring about what you want to change, the more focused and efficient your session will be.
Come with an open and curious mind, and also with realistic expectations. PSYCH-K® can create rapid shifts, but it's not magic—it's a partnership between you, me, and your inner wisdom. The results depend significantly on your willingness to change, your commitment to taking action afterward, and whether your subconscious deems the change "safe and appropriate" at this time.
I often suggest that you write down your goals before the session or note specific situations where you feel limited. For example, instead of just "I want to be more confident," you might identify "I want to feel confident speaking up in meetings" or "I want to feel confident dating after my divorce." Specific examples help us craft targeted belief statements.
Avoid trying to control the process or predetermine exactly what beliefs you'll work on. Your subconscious wisdom often knows better than your conscious mind what needs attention first. Many people are surprised by what comes up in sessions—they came for career issues but discovered relationship beliefs needed addressing first, for instance.
For virtual sessions, it’s best to find a quiet, comfortable space where you won't be interrupted. You'll need room to move and adopt different postures during the Balances. I encourage clients to have water nearby (the process requires that you stay hydrated), tissues (emotional releases can happen), and a journal for notes afterward. Turn off phone notifications and let household members know you need uninterrupted time.
-
Sessions begin with conversation to clarify your intentions and explore what's not working in your life. I will ask questions to help you identify the underlying beliefs creating obstacles. This isn't traditional therapy where you analyze childhood for insights—it's focused detective work to pinpoint the specific beliefs running your subconscious autopilot. You might discuss patterns, feelings, and situations where you feel stuck.
Together, we'll create new belief statements that support what you actually want. These statements need to be worded carefully—present tense, positive (what you want rather than what you don't want), and emotionally resonant. "I am worthy of love" works better than "I will try to believe I deserve love." I will help craft statements that feel authentic and empowering to you.
Muscle testing comes next to assess what your subconscious currently believes. I will have you extend your arm straight forward (or out to the side), then apply gentle downward pressure at your wrist while you state a belief. If your arm stays strong, your subconscious holds that belief as true; if it goes weak, your subconscious registers it as false or stressful. This often reveals surprising conflicts between conscious desires and subconscious programming.
Before any change, I use permission protocols to verify the change is "safe and appropriate." Through muscle testing, I ask your subconscious if it's okay to proceed with the transformation. If the answer is no, we explore why—sometimes what looks like a problem is actually serving a protective purpose or teaching an important lesson. PSYCH-K® honors your inner wisdom's "no" and investigates rather than overriding it.
The actual belief change happens during a Balance chosen by your subconscious through muscle testing. You'll adopt a specific posture—perhaps sitting with your right ankle crossed over your left and your left wrist crossed over your right, or standing doing cross-crawl movements, or holding other positions depending on which Balance your subconscious selects. You hold the position while focusing on your new belief, typically for 1-10 minutes.
After the Balance, muscle testing verifies the change. Your new belief should now test strong where it previously tested weak. This immediate feedback confirms the transformation has happened at the subconscious level. You might address 2-6 beliefs in a session depending on their complexity and how much time each Balance requires.

Most people report feeling deeply relaxed during the Balances, even if they came in anxious or stressed. The crossed-ankle, crossed-wrist posture (one of the most common Balances) has a naturally calming effect on the nervous system. Many describe sensations of energy moving, warmth, tingling, or a pleasant floating feeling. The state resembles meditation or deep relaxation but with more focus.
Emotional releases happen fairly commonly and are completely normal. You might find yourself crying, not from sadness but from relief as old patterns release. Or you might laugh at how seriously you've been taking a limiting belief that suddenly seems absurd. Some people feel waves of emotion during the Balance; others experience shifts more subtly with just a sense of things settling into place.
Physical sensations vary widely from person to person. Some report feeling lighter, as if a weight has lifted. Others notice tension releasing from areas of their body where they've been holding stress. A few people feel temporarily tired or emotional as their system integrates the changes. All of these responses are normal and indicate your nervous system is processing the transformation.
The mental shift can be immediate and obvious or subtle and gradual. Some people walk out of their first session feeling completely different—like fear around a specific situation just dissolved, or confidence they've never felt before suddenly feels natural and solid. One client described it as "the shift that happens within is almost immediate and feels as solid as a rock." Some people even forget that they came in with an issue as the release has already resolved it.
Others notice changes unfolding over the following days and weeks. You might find yourself spontaneously acting in new ways that align with your new beliefs—speaking up in situations where you'd normally stay quiet, making different food choices without trying, or feeling calm in circumstances that previously triggered anxiety. The changes feel natural rather than forced because they're coming from your subconscious autopilot, not conscious effort.
It's also completely fine to feel no different immediately after a session. As we facilitators often remind clients, how you feel during or right after the Balance doesn't determine whether it worked. The muscle testing verification shows the belief has changed at the subconscious level, and the effects may manifest more gradually as that new programming influences your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Most people describe feeling empowered rather than "healed" by someone else. Because PSYCH-K is a "do-with" process where you're actively directing the transformation, you leave sessions with a sense of your own power and agency. You did this. I am just guiding the process.
-
Results can show up immediately, within days, or gradually over weeks. Some people notice instant shifts during the session—anxiety around a specific situation just gone, cravings disappeared, confidence suddenly there where it wasn't before. Others report that over the next few days, they realize they're automatically acting differently without conscious effort. Still others find the changes unfold more subtly over weeks as new beliefs progressively influence their choices and experiences.
Your life circumstances may start shifting to match your new beliefs. This can look like synchronicities, opportunities appearing, relationships improving, or obstacles that seemed immovable suddenly resolving. From the PSYCH-K® perspective, when your internal programming changes, your external reality reorganizes to align with it. What you attract and create shifts because the energy you're putting out has fundamentally changed.
Some people experience what's called integration symptoms—temporary tiredness, emotional sensitivity, or a sense of things settling. Your nervous system and subconscious are reorganizing around new beliefs, which takes energy. If you feel unusually tired or emotional for a day or two after a session, that's normal. Rest, drink water, and give yourself grace during the integration period.
Old patterns might test the new beliefs. Don't be surprised if situations arise that would normally trigger your old response. This isn't the belief change failing—it's life giving you opportunities to practice your new programming. When you handle these situations differently than you used to, you're reinforcing the new neural pathways and proving to yourself that real transformation has occurred.
Not seeing results right away doesn't mean nothing happened. If weeks pass and you're not experiencing the changes you hoped for, check whether you're following through on your action steps. Beliefs create potential, but action creates results. Also explore whether there might be other underlying beliefs that need attention first—sometimes the key to the change you want lies in addressing a different area of life.

Be sure to use the materials I provide. I’ve created a “Daily Intention & Reflection Self-Awareness Prompter” to help you track your progress. I generally send you home with the belief statements we balanced.
Stay mindful and journal about shifts you notice. Pay attention to moments when you respond differently than you used to, when old triggers don't affect you the same way, or when new opportunities appear. Writing these down helps you recognize and celebrate progress, even if it's subtle. Transformation isn't always dramatic—sometimes it's just noticing you naturally made a healthier choice without internal struggle.
Give yourself time and space for integration. If you can, build in quiet time after sessions—a walk, journaling, napping, or just sitting in silence. Your system is reorganizing at deep levels; honor that process. Some people find that scheduling sessions when they don't have to immediately jump into demanding activities works better.
Be patient with the unfolding. While PSYCH-K® can create rapid shifts, habit change and life reorganization take time. Not seeing immediate dramatic results doesn't mean nothing's happening. The new beliefs are working at the subconscious level, progressively influencing your automatic responses and the energy you put out into the world. Stay committed to your action steps and trust the process.
Celebrate even small progress. Did you speak up once in a meeting when you normally wouldn't? That's huge. Did you feel calm in a situation that used to trigger anxiety? Worth celebrating. Acknowledging wins reinforces the new neural pathways and builds momentum for continued transformation.

Return for more sessions if needed. Most people have layers of limiting beliefs around their core issues. While some people achieve their goals in 1-3 sessions, others benefit from working through multiple layers over time. The average is around seven sessions according to founder Rob Williams. Think of it as peeling an onion rather than flipping a light switch for complex issues.
While one session is sometimes enough for you to achieve your wishes, occasionally we need to work on the possible issues around it and to meet more often. We are all individuals, spiritual beings in a physical body, and we learn in different ways and at different paces. It's good to remember that PSYCH-K® is a process, not a quick-fix program, although it can work quickly!
After the sessions, it's good to observe what has changed, how you react differently in similar situations, or do you need another session. Typically you will feel some transformations in some areas of your life (usually the ones we have worked with), sometimes in many areas of your life. The action plan is often needed to achieve results faster or at all. You may be surprised by the changes.
Because we live in one universe and energy travels through space, we can use PSYCH-K® via Zoom also. In that case, I will be surrogating you during the balancing. As odd as it may seem, it is as efficient as seeing face-to-face. I suggest we use this possibility in case you do not live nearby to make an office appointment.
